V50 Windscreen scratches easily?

Hi. Is anyone else having problems with their windscreen scratching on a v50? I picked my car up used last summer and the windscreen was very scratched. Not worried though as it had a large chip in it so I had it replaced under insurance. Straight away I put new wipers on from volvo and it was great. However now after 6 months / 10,000 miles the screen is already quite scratched again - wipers were replaced again with volvo ones last month. Ive not had this problem with any other car ive owned recently and they all get treated the same. My only conclusion is that it must be a fault in the wipers themselves - too much pressure on the glas maybe? Blank faces at the dealership when I ask them about it. Has anyone else had similar problems?

Paul, People are not ignoring you. I assume, like me they just have not had this problem. Are you in a location where you may get a lot of dust or grit on the window which then gets dragged along it and scratches? If anything I think my wipers are too floppy but of course that does not mean that your own are not set too stiffly. Hopefully someone will be able to help but if they don't it is only because they cannot add something. Incidentally, I would not take too much notice of what your dealer says. I find that dealers, of all makes, are very reluctant to own up to issues that are around. They are either thick and not aware of what is going on or they are deliberately trying to deceive us, the customers. Personally I think it is a mixture of the two.

My windscreen on the S40 II has become scratched in many locations, not that the scratches alter visibility through it, but they can be seen from an angle when the sun is out. Noticed them while cleaning the windscreen with a rain repelant, thank goodnes i don't yet have those quarter circle scratches i used to have on my old car. I guess driving too close behind cars and lorries on wet roads with the wipers on caused them, that's why i always use the washer now prior to activitaing the wipers to dilute that dirty water splashing from the road and to ease friction of any particles it has in it on the screen... If the scratches are not too deep, you could try using a glass scratch remover and loads of elbow grease. My problem now are those hard water white stains that remained on the glass after i washed the car in the sun last sunday. :baring_teeth: i've tried vinegar and even kitchen and bathroom cleaning products to remove them but with no success, they can only be seen when the glass is wet but they do worsen visibility especially at night.

I have a similar issue. I noticed the other day in bright sunlight (a rare moment at this time of year in Edinburgh) that my windscreen is blighted by little scratches all over it. Not much I can do about it I suspect but it does seem to suffer more than most car windscreens.

I know this is an old thread but it was the first result in Google... Is this a known problem? My wipers (or so I thought) are terrible, replaced them with no difference to the smearing when wet, can barely see sometimes... Was advised to clean it with some alcohol which I did, but during the clean I noticed that the surface of the glass has tiny chips and scratches all over it, never seen this on another car I've owned. Just waiting for a big chip now so I can get it replaced!

I guess volvo's glass is softer than normal. Only thing that bugs me is the dirt trapped in those tiny holes punched by stones, not matter what they can not be cleaned. Also wipers scratch more of course, but that you can live with or polish it.

When I bought my V50 the windscreen was badly scatched / scored to the extent that I actually had the screen replaced. That made a stunning improvement to the driving experience! Geoff

Interesting to read this old thread. My V50 has loads of wiper scratching. They are quite fine, but scatter the headlights of oncoming cars, quite distracting , particularly in addition to the reflections from my glasses. There is a thread on polishing on Piston heads, using a drill mounted pad and ceramic powder. I might have a go when the weather improves.
