running REAPER from USB on mac

MessageAuthor

How do you go about doing this on a mac? Is it as simple as dragging the .app over to the USB key? What about all your personal settings? themes, macros with custom icons in toolbars, license code, etc. The manual mentions installing on USB with a PC, but not mac. As always, all help v much appreciated. S.

Ok, I'm not on Mac so I really don't know how similar these versions are, but just to get things started here's one thing to check; Do you have a start menu list with all the different Reaper start options in there? At least on PC version there's an option right there to install your Reaper to USB key. All your personal settings are carried over automatically, but I don't know how it will work if you have lots of your custom stuff all over the computer. Might have to move some of that manually.

Yeah you have to do it sort of manually but it's not too hard to set up... 1. Open Reaper and go Options>Show REAPER Resource path in finder 2. Open another finder window and open your USB key 3. Copy all of the contents of the REAPER resource directory you opened in step 1 onto the USB key 4. Open Applications in Finder and copy REAPER.app onto the USB key as well, in the same directory as everything else (ie. alongside reaper.ini, reaper-kb.ini, etc.) Now you should be able to run Reaper from the USB key and it will load up with all your personal settings in tact.

RE: running REAPER from USB on mac

thanks adam. appreciate the help. Might it be worth including this info in the next draft of the manual? Especially when REAPER 4 comes out? This is a really cool feature of REAPER. Have an 8Gb usb on my keychain. So if I install REAPER as described in the manual using a PC, and copy over the app and .ini files on the mac, I'd be able to open up my work on pretty much any machine made in the last 5 years! That is sweeeeet.

RE: running REAPER from USB on mac

Hi, I travel a lot with my work laptop, for which I do not have admin privileges. Can I run Reaper off of a USB stick without having to install or modify anything on the computer? Of course, I would have to use the built it soundcard as I could not install the driver for my Fast Track Pro. At least I would be able play around a bit in Reaper, and if anything learn how to use it, right? Thanks, Rich

richj: Yup you totally can! On PC just use the "install to a portable drive" option in the start menu folder and on OSX just follow my instructions above. You are likely on Windows though, I don't hear of too many work computer Macbook Pros, haha...
